Lately I'm in to historical romances...and "Empire Adrift"is a book for those who love history, it talks about the first and last monarchy in the tropics when Napoleon's forces chased the Portuguese court out of Lisbon and into Rio De Janeiro.
With the regent prince D. João VI that might have had many ridiculous ticks, and many insecurities, he was not stupid at all in a time when much stronger kings or leaders such as Napoleon fell. Facing all the difficulties, still he had to face his eccentric wife D. Carlota Joaquina, thirsty for power, conspiring all the time against her husband witch relationship was more and more difficult trough out the years.
It is a very interesting document of these crazy times, it paints a vivid picture of the personal and political dramas this time held for both peoples (portuguese and brazilian), with a reversed metropolis-colony, and by the time the prince regent and most of his entourage reluctantly returned "home" to Portugal 13 years laterPortugal and Brazil’s history was altered forever and whose consequences are still felt today.
And here a interesting review about this book!
